What Is Sushi?
Sushi is a global favorite. It is everywhere, from casual conveyor belt spots to luxurious omakase restaurants. But if you are new to sushi, you are actually scared to step into any of these restaurants.
Because you don’t know the sheer variety of rolls and ingredients
This is why we have created this detailed blog, which is a guide to the most popular sushi rolls and the key ingredients in them.
Japanese cuisine isn’t just limited to ramen. It also features stunning and complex dishes like sushi, which is made with vinegared rice, which, in turn, is seasoned with a mix of sugar and salt, thus having a sweet and tangy flavor.
While seafood is the hero of this dish, sushi is defined by its rice. Without the vinegared rice, it’s not sushi.
This is why sashimi is different from sushi. It only has thinly sliced raw fish served without rice. Hence, it is not sushi, even though the two are often listed side by side on restaurant menus.

Types of Sushi
Sushi has many different forms. So, instead of discussing them all at once, we have categorized them into two broad groups.
- Nigirizushi (Gripped Sushi)
Nigiri is a hand-shaped oval of rice. It is mostly shaped like a triangle, and topped with fish or any other seafood. While many use raw toppings, some also add cooked meat on it like shrimp or eel.
- Makizushi (Rolled Sushi)
Maki is rolled sushi. It is made by rolling fillings with vinegared rice. The rolls are then wrapped in nori (seaweed) and cut into bite-sized pieces. All the common variations of sushi fall under this category, such as;
- Uramaki (Inside-Out Roll): Rice is on the outside, and nori is inside.
- Hosomaki (Thin Roll): These are small, simple rolls with just rice and one type of filling, such as cucumber or salmon.
- Gunkan-maki (Battleship Roll): This is a rice mound wrapped with nori to form a bowl for toppings such as roe.
- Temaki (Hand Roll): Temaki are cone-shaped rolls, loosely filled with rice, seafood, and vegetables.
