February has a magical personality.
It retains some of the cool spells of winter, brings a little bit of fragrance from spring, and is as eager for the onset of summer as we are.
February has always been mystical, at least for me. That is why it is my favorite month to travel.
And I have a ton of places to recommend in the US to travel in February.
To put it another way, US in February has its own vibe. Relaxed atmosphere and off-season charm that whispers (or shouts) its presence the moment you set foot. At least, that’s how I felt about all the places in the United States I have explored in February over the years.
And yes, much like the other traveling stories I’ve written, I am writing this one because I associate February in the United States with a very “feminine” energy.
Take, for instance, the rolling hills and vineyards of Napa Valley and Charleston, South Carolina’s romantic streets making me feel like I am in a rom-com movie. Do I sound dreamy? Maybe, but these places in February make you feel something, and I think that’s the whole point of traveling.
I could keep going, but you get the idea.
So, whether you’re chasing the breathtaking crystal-blue waters of Lake Tahoe with family or looking for the sun-kissed beaches of Oahu, Hawaii, this February’s checklist of the best places in the USA is your perfect excuse to arrange a trip that speaks to your soul.
Is February a Good Time To Visit the USA?
February has always been the best time to plan my US trips in February.
It’s a low tourist season, I can cut back on food and stay costs, and every place is so comfortably warm. Last year, we found ourselves alternating between destinations that had already welcomed summer (Sarasota, I’m looking at you!) and others that were still wrapped up in snow, like Steamboat Springs in Colorado.
Not that I had much say in where we were going last February (my friends were way ahead of me in terms of planning), but we always end up planning the most exciting trips in February.
For example, a coastal city escape to Santa Barbara? That’s the only thing your heart needs sometimes – wind in your hair, toes in the sand. Once, a couple of years ago, we wound up in the stunning red-rock scenery of Sedona, Arizona. And, if you haven’t strolled through the Laguna Madre Trail in South Padre Island, what are you even doing with your life? I don’t know any book or movie that looks more mesmerizing than these real-life places.
It is pretty much the beginning of all the cool spots you can travel to in the US in February that I am going to cover in this blog. Stay with me!
Where To Travel In February USA For Warm Weather
Oahu, Hawaii
One of the best places to visit in the US in February is Hawaii, especially Oahu, as the weather is warm and ideal for plenty of activities. You can watch the humpback whales from the shore, enjoy the surfing events, or maybe, if you have a lover in tow, spend your Valentine’s Day with a sunset walk or stargazing at Makapu’u Lighthouse. Furthermore, you can also benefit from the warm weather and explore the Hanauma Beach or Kualoa Ranch.

Sarasota, Florida
If you are wondering where it will still be warm in the US in February, go to Sarasota, Florida. In my opinion, February is one of the best months to visit Sarasota. However, it is a bit crowded too. The last time we went, we had a hard time getting a place to stay. But there are many reasons why this destination in the US is flooded with tourists in February, and some of them are Annual Suncoast Scots Highland Games and Celtic Festival, Annual Englewood Seafood & Music Festival, and The St. Barbara Greek Festival, etc.
Sarasota, Florida
San Diego, California
San Diego has a range of diverse activities that you can enjoy in February. This is where we go whenever we feel that “daring” energy. From wildlife exploration in San Diego Safari Park to the New Orleans-style SeaWorld Mardi Gras carnival and the winter gray whale watching, there is so much you can do to enjoy the chilly but slightly warm weather in the city. Don’t forget to experience the San Diego Chinese New Year Fair in downtown. The celebrations will bring you even closer to the local community.
San Diego, California
New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans, Louisiana, is another one of the best places to travel in the U.S. in February for warm weather. Holidays in New Orleans, especially in February, have always been my favorite. You can celebrate Black History among the friendly neighborhoods, restaurants, and other businesses, attend the Vietnamese New Year, or enjoy theatre and dance with the New Orleans Baller Association. The Mardi Gras festivities also bring celebrations, lots of good food, and vibrant parades in New Orleans, Louisiana.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Miami, Florida
February in Miami isn’t as chilly as the rest of the U.S., and the average temperatures range between 63 and 76 degrees Fahrenheit. This is where I ditch my coats and boring winter outfits and hop on a boat or luxury superyacht. This year, we are already looking forward to the South Beach Wine and Food Festival. If you are coming here with a special someone, arrange an intimate dinner at Venetian Gondola or The Baltimore.
Miami, Florida
Palm Springs, California
February is a great time to visit Palm Springs in California. Besides Black History Month, the Annual Taste of Jalisco Festival, and The Big Game, the warm desert climate is perfect for indulging in outdoor activities. Hop on a bike, explore the country club golf courses, check out the local architecture, or hike in the Indian Canyons. If we have nothing special planned, we always end up in the Joshua Tree National Park.
Palm Springs, California
Santa Barbara, California
If you want to escape to a coastal city in the US this February, Santa Barbara might be a perfect choice. The stunning south-facing coastline is pretty much tourist-free in February, which is why you can explore the attractions and activities of the city without any hassle, such as sunset viewing, wine tours, music festivals, and the Monarch Butterfly Season.
Santa Barbara, California
Tampa Bay, Florida
Tampa Bay has balmy temperatures from February till early May. It is perfect for visiting this place in the US in February for outdoor activities like the Gasparilla Music Festival, dining near the pristine white sandy beaches, exploring the Tampa Riverwalk, or indulging in water sports, such as paddle boards, kayaks, boats, jet skiing, etc.
Tampa Bay, Florida
Death Valley, California
February, one of the chilliest months, is probably the best time to visit this hot and arid valley in California. February is also the start of spring wildflower season; hiking activities are on the rise, and the relatively cooler days, chilly nights, and fewer chances of rainstorms make the skies clear and perfect for stargazing activities.
Death Valley, California
Cheap places to travel in February USA
South Padre Island, Texas
If you are on a budget and wondering where to travel to the US in February, there is no better place than South Padre Island in Texas. February is an off-season, which means that the town is mostly crowd-free, the hotel rates are relatively lower, and there are so many exciting activities you can enjoy, such as strolling along the Laguna Madre Trail, going on a dolphin cruise or picnicking in Isla Blanca Park.
South Padre Island, Texas
Tucson, Arizona
Tucson isn’t going to be as warm as Florida in February, which means that swimming-related activities aren’t going to happen. However, if you are still looking for budget-friendly places to visit in the US in February, Tucson might be a good choice. The hotel and restaurant prices might be a bit high due to peak tourist season, but there is plenty of free stuff to do around town, like cruise downtown and outdoor music activities. Plus, you can explore as many biking and hiking trails as you would like, without worrying about soaring temperatures.

The coastal breezes at Gulf Shores feel even more incredible in February if you are looking for places to visit in the US during this month. Asheville, North Carolina
Portland, Oregon
Portland is extremely worthy of visiting in the U.S. in February. You might find the city wet and chilly, but the spring season is starting, which means that the flowers and green landscapes are going to look even more beautiful. Take advantage of this beautiful season and check out the Portland Japanese Garden, Washington Park, Pittock Mansion, International Rose Test Garden, or the Oregon Zoo.
Portland, Oregon
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah’s manicured and ancient beauty always draws travelers to this part of the United States in February, when the crowds are smaller, and there is plenty of space and time to admire the River Street and Georgian homes. The weather is warm and sunny, and African-American heritage attractions call you to take a historical tour of the whole city.

Best places to visit in February for couples
Sedona, Arizona
The red rock scenery of Sedona might look romantic in summer, but the temperatures are sometimes insufferable. Fret not. February might be the perfect time to visit this breathtaking city in the U.S. The hotels are available at the most economical prices, and you can hike all the popular trails without worrying about the crowd. However, do bring some warm clothing with you, as some of the trails on the mountains can get freezing in February.
Sedona, Arizona
Charleston, South Carolina
The old colonial homes of Charleston already create a lovey-dovey environment, and so do the courtyards and picturesque streets, but sometimes the influx of tourists ruins all the fun. But this romantic place in the U.S. is perfect to visit during February, as it is an off-season, but also coming up with lots of events, like Camellia Walks and Lowcountry Oyster Festival. French Quarter Inn is a stunning boutique hotel where we stayed for a couple of nights and still reminisce about the beautiful time we had there.
Charleston, South Carolina
Napa Valley, California
Napa Valley is also a low season, so it is perfect to visit the U.S. in February. The city has so much love to offer during this season. Stay here if you are looking for world-renowned wineries (don’t forget to taste Cabernet Sauvignon!), the spas and cozy resorts in the city, as well as scenic driveways that take you to the most breathtaking backroads of Napa Valley.
Napa Valley, California
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe, New Mexico, has a lot of love to show you this February, and you can share it with your significant other by visiting the arts festivals, skiing atop a 12,075-foot-high local hill, or joining the locals at the Annual Santa Fe Restaurant Week. Well, I did. There are many impressive accommodation options around the city, such as adobe brick roadside hotels and historic inns.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Key West, Florida
As a couple who is always creating a spark in our relationship, Key West has always been one of our favorite places to visit in the United States in February. First of all, Valentine’s Day is celebrated throughout the city with zeal, and no matter which bar or restaurant you hit, you will find romantic and intimate dining options. Or, if you are a daring couple, rent a jet ski and ride across the warm ocean waters together.

Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
Lake Tahoe, which is known for its breathtaking crystal blue waters, is perfect to witness with your whole family. Take your kids and the whole family to this place in the U.S. in February, as there are many exciting things to do, such as skiing, snowshoeing along the Tahoe Rim Trail, ice skating at South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena, or fishing, despite the freezing temperatures.
Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Steamboat Springs is another best family-friendly place to visit in the United States this February. Orlando, Florida
Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, which makes it the perfect place in the United States to visit with your family in February.
